How to prep for ceramic coating? - Ceramic Coating Expert?

By Lulu September 23rd, 2024

To prep a surface for ceramic coating, whether it’s a car, a boat, or another item, you need to ensure the surface is clean, smooth, and free of any contaminants. The preparation process is crucial for the coating to bond properly and last as long as possible. Here’s a step-by-step guide to preparing for ceramic coating:

1. Thorough Wash

  • Purpose: Remove dirt, dust, and debris from the surface.
  • How to Do It: Use a pH-neutral automotive soap or a quality cleaner to wash the surface. Make sure you wash all parts of the vehicle or object thoroughly.
  • Tip: Use a foam cannon or microfiber wash mitt to minimize scratching.

2. Decontamination

  • Iron/Fallout Remover: After washing, spray an iron remover on the surface to eliminate any embedded iron particles that may not come off during a regular wash.
  • Clay Bar: Use a clay bar to physically remove embedded contaminants like tar, brake dust, tree sap, and other impurities that regular washing can’t remove.
    • How to Use a Clay Bar: Spray a clay lubricant on the surface and glide the clay bar gently across. You’ll feel it grab the contaminants. Continue until the surface feels smooth.

3. Polish/Correct Paint (if needed)

  • Purpose: To remove any swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, or imperfections before applying the ceramic coating. The coating locks in the surface’s current state, so imperfections will remain if they’re not corrected.
  • How to Do It:
    • For minor imperfections, use a finishing polish.
    • For heavier defects, use a compound followed by a polish to achieve a smooth, defect-free finish.
    • Use a dual-action or rotary polisher for better results.

4. Panel Wipe (Isopropyl Alcohol Wipe Down)

  • Purpose: This step removes all oils, waxes, and polish residues left behind after the previous steps. Any contaminants left on the surface can prevent the ceramic coating from bonding properly.
  • How to Do It: Mix a solution of 50% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and distilled water, or use a dedicated panel wipe solution. Wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth in straight lines.

5. Inspect the Surface

  • Purpose: Ensure the surface is entirely clean and defect-free.
  • How to Do It: Under good lighting, inspect for swirl marks, scratches, or any missed areas. If necessary, re-polish or wipe down the surface.

6. Environment Setup

  • Ensure a Controlled Environment: Ceramic coating should be applied in a clean, dust-free environment. Dust or contaminants can settle on the surface before the coating cures.
  • Temperature and Humidity: Ideal temperatures for applying ceramic coating usually range between 60°F and 80°F (15°C-27°C). Humidity should be low to moderate to prevent the coating from drying too quickly or too slowly.

7. Ready for Coating

  • Now that the surface is clean, decontaminated, polished, and wiped down, it’s ready for the ceramic coating application.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Time and Patience: Proper prep can take several hours to a full day depending on the size of the vehicle or object and its condition.
  • Use High-Quality Products: Invest in quality ceramic coating, clay bars, polishes, and applicators for long-lasting results.
  • Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always refer to the specific ceramic coating product instructions for application techniques, curing times, and aftercare.
